Beatles songs
I grew up with Beatles songs. My little brother and I used to sing it together while jumping up and down on the red Chitose chairs, dancing to the songs’ beat.
Since we couldn’t grasp the lines correctly, we made our own Beatles lyrics based on our comprehension. We changed the Obladi Oblada refrain from:
“Obladi oblada… Life goes on… bra… Lala How the life goes on…”
to: “Obladi oblada…Lakosombra…lalalala lakosom….”
And we also changed the chorus tip's of The Ballads of John and Yoko from
”They’re going crucify me…”
to: “singkong rebus digarami" (boiled cassava poured with salt)
Besides listening to it’s records, I also watched the Beatles movies which I borrowed from Bim-Bim video rental at Tebet Timur, along with Japanese anime and Chinese Kung Fu videos. My little brother liked John Lennon and Paul McCartney whom are considered as the group leaders. I liked Paul (because he’s handsome and cute) and Ringo Starr (because of his parrot-like nose). To me, John Lennon face quite sharpy.
On the 5th grade, my school invited Abadi Soesman's Barata band to be the guest star of our school anniversary celebration. The band was the Beatles imitator at that time. When they performed, I automatically jumped up the chair and sang together with the band, while other kids can only memorize Sheren Regina Dau’s songs (or so I thought….:p)
I don’t have particular favorite Beatles songs. I think I like most of their songs. But I don’t really like Penny Lane and Strawberry Fields Forever because I think the songs quite sentimental.
“Love Actually” movie depicts “All You Need Is Love” song well, when Juliet (played by Keyra Knigthley) and Peter (Chiwetel Ejiofor) get married. During the wedding tranquility, the choir suddenly sings “All You Need is Love” and lighten up the room. I see the song is portrayed as glorification of love.
My radio used to have a special program named “Dunia Beatles” (The World of Beatles) which was hosted by a potential-future-icon, Hilman Handoni :p The program talked about the group’s career saga, stories behind the songs and other stuff related to the Beatles. It was broadcast with the cooperation of Indo Beatlemania Club, Indonesian Beatles enthusiasts. But when I listened to one of it’s show, I didn’t recognize most of the songs being played! Well…. I guess my Beatles collection was not much after all… :p
I remember the Beatles again after I saw Imel ‘Strawberry’, a talented singer and pianist on TVRI’s “Country Road” show couple of days ago. She sang one of the Beatles songs beautifully (as she always does) titled “I Will”. And I know that I keep falling in love to Beatles songs because of it’s simplicity and it’s memorable melody which give you something to smile upon your day.
Who knows how long I've loved you
You know I love you still
Will I wait a lonely lifetime
If you want me to--I will.
For if I ever saw you
I didn't catch your name
But it never really mattered
I will always feel the same.
Love you forever and forever
Love you with all my heart
Love you when ever we're together
Love you when we're apart.
And when at last I find you
Your song will fill the air
Sing it loud so I can hear you
Make it easy to be near you
For the things you do endear you to me
You know I will
I will.
(I Will, the Beatles)
